Kate Powderly

Born: September 29 1883

Kate loved the idea of being photographed. Like many subjects (including most artists and photographers) she preferred not to have an audience when having her portrait made. So, on her suggestion we went to the hall, to a chair she designated, and that’s where I shot this image. Kate, a quiet lady, was perfectly relaxed all through the session. She watched as I adjusted the camera and tripod, and when I opened out the black cloth — for her, I’m sure, a throwback to old times — it was as if she entered a state of blissful reminiscence.
